Marcelino Botín started Botin Partners Naval Architecture as a design and construction project in 1995.

It was the initial stages of the IMS boom in the Med and new racing projects where emerging all over Spain. With the help of sponsorship from the insurance company Zuritel, Marcelino started the company Astilleros Mouro in Santander, Spain, with the objective of designing, building and campaigning a 33’ IMS racer in the Spanish IMS circuit. The Zuritel crew formed by talented local sailors campaigned this first Botin design during two very successful seasons in 1996 and 1997. Between 1998 to 2005 our office specifically designed custom IMS racers, winning the Copa del Rey and IMS World Championships in several seasons.

In 2004 Marcelino Botin joined Team New Zealand as Principal Designer for the AC32 campaign. This was his first contact with the America’s Cup Class, considered the pinnacle of yacht design at that time. ETNZ went all the way to the Final, having won the Louis Vuitton Cup against Prada.

In 2005 the TP52 Class held the first Audi MedCup season, and the Botin designed Pisco Sour, skippered by Vasco Vascotto, won the overall title.

In 2008, Marcelino, Adolfo, and the Botin Partners team designed their first Volvo 70 for Ken Read’s Puma, coming 2nd overall. This was their first Ocean Racer design and their first attempt at competing at a Round the World Race. In 2011 our office was appointed by ETNZ to design their Camper sponsored VOR70, coming 2nd overall as well.

In 2013, we joined Luna Rossa Challenge for the AC35 campaign. Marcelino was appointed as Principal Designer, Adolfo took the responsibility as Design Coordinator, and Paolo Periotto joined the Prada Design Team.

Botin Partners has enjoyed unprecedented international success in the racing and cruising yacht arena, winning a host of ORC and TP52 World Championships, and many of the world’s most prestigious sailing events, such as the 2019 & 2021 Rolex Maxi Cup with the innovative “Cannonball 72”.

We are especially proud of the extraordinary success of our TP52 designs, winning 12 consecutive TP52 overall season titles (2008-2019) by Quantum Racing, ETNZ, and Azzurra. Our recent designs have also won the prestigious Rolex Sydney Hobart, Fastnet Race, Middle Sea Race, and Caribbean 600.

In 2017 we were approached by the talented skipper Terry Hutchinson to join the NYYC American Magic AC36 challenge, giving our best shot at winning the “Auld Mug”!

Botin Partners is now involved in the design of several spectacular and highly innovative fast cruising boats of large size that will see the light in the next few years.
